Lucy has a Foster Brother!

Meet Kyte!  We are thinking that Kyte is most definitely part Whippet, and he and Lucy are getting along really well.  Anyone looking to add a new member to their family??

Eventful Dog Park Day

Since I've been on MEA, I've been able to get Lucy to the dog park more frequently.  This is easily in her top 5 favorite places to go (not including our home, her top 5 includes-in no particular order-my parents' house, Luke's parents' house, Grand Marais, Crosslake, and the dog park).  Every time we've made it out to the park, Lucy comes away exhausted after having made a ton of new friends.  Today was no exception...

When we first got there, Lucy spent a good deal of time chasing after a sweet Jack Russel Terrier (there was no way that she'd ever be able to catch it), and then a Bernese Mountain Dog joined in the fun.  It's amazing how much Lucy loves being in the pack.  Then we started our walk into the woods, where we met up with a pack of 3 dogs (2 aussies and a mixed dog that looked like it had italian greyhound in her).  Lucy had actually met this pack on Thursday, so we walked the rest of the park together (meeting even more dogs along the way!).  When we got back to the field, there were at least 7 or 8 other dogs already at the park, so Lucy wasted no time and began running with the packs (mostly hearding dogs, a few labs, and a couple goldens).  Lucy was having the time of her life.  For a good portion of the running, Lucy was at the front of the pack and enjoyed ever second of it.  Until...

Man, I wish I didn't have to write "Until..."  I also wish that people wouldn't bring dogs that they know don't care for other dogs at the park, especially in the area where the dogs run around and romp with each other.

Anyway, things were going great until this German Shepherd decided to join the pack and single out Lucy.  She was a growly one, but I didn't really think much of it since lots of dogs are vocal when they play.  But then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw her get really close to Lucy's hindquarters, and then Lucy let out a painful YELP!  She ran over to me, and I told her it was okay (though I did notice the frothy spot on Lucy's thigh...), and the GS's owner called to his dog and told her to "Stop it."  Did she stop?  Nope.  Lucy was clearly frightened of this dog, and whenever she got close to Lucy, she growled and tried to get in her space.  Every time the dog got close, Lucy would let out the YELP! again.  I realized that this man wasn't going to do anything to control his dog (which was clearly frightening and intimidating my dog), so I called Lucy to come with me to the other side of the park.  The GS wanted to follow, but fortunately the man decided that it would be a good time to take the GS on a walk, so he finally leashed her up.

When he had started down the trail, I started talking with some other dog park visitors and one came in saying, "I hear that I need to steer clear of the black German shepherd!"  so clearly someone else saw what was going on and had warned this lady (also reconfirming what happened and that I didn't exaggerate it in my head).  Another man up there commented that his dog had been attacked by that German Shepherd before, which led to a conversation about responsible dog ownership, etc.

After the unfortunate incident, Lucy was wary of the other dogs for a few minutes, but then became fast buddies with the new dogs that came into the park (including a boxer-mix puppy!), so I know that she won't associate the dog park with mean dogs, but it just sucks that such a wonderful morning full of conversation and good ol' pack running had to be tainted by one dog's actions.

As a reward for getting through this whole post, here are some pictures I recently uploaded from my phone!

Another Picture Dump!

I've definitely been slacking on posting here, but I've got a bunch of photos to share that I finally uploaded to my computer from over the summer.
One day, Lucy decided that she disliked the big blue chair quite a bit and that it needed to be destroyed.  RIP Big Blue Chair.

Pretty sure that this is Lucy's new favorite place in the world.

Lovely Lucy

Lucy is one of the lucky winners of Secondhand Hounds' calendar contest, and she had her photo shoot a few weeks ago.  The photographer posted the edited images and we couldn't be more pleased with how they turned out!  I just wanted to share a couple of them with you:  (p.s. All photos in this post are copyrighted to Sarahbeth Photography)

Stray Dog Arts

About a month ago, I was getting coffee at the Linden Hills Dunn Bros. and noticed the local artwork they had on their walls. They were oil portraits of dogs and people with their dogs, and they looked gorgeous. I took note of the artist, and told myself to remember to look up Stray Dog Arts when I got back home.

Of course, I forgot.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks later, I was wandering the Uptown Art Fair with my sister in law, and found that Stray Dog Arts had a booth set up!  I looked over her work and was amazed again.  While I would LOVE to have a portrait of Lucy done by her, it's a little out of my price range at the moment (custom pieces start at $1,600).  I decided to check out her etsy site anyways, and ended up falling in love with a little 4"x4" wood block print which was well in my price range (only $25).  It came in the mail today, and I wanted to share how darling it is!

Can you figure out why I love it so much??

Lucy and her print!  See the resemblance?

Lucy's Latest!

This is a cross-post from my other blog, but I wanted to share Lucy's new trick with you all!

1st puppy sleepover!

My parents are out of town for the weekend, and since both of my sisters who currently live at home are pretty busy with work, Luke and I offered to have Griz stay with us! While a 10 or 11 week old puppy is a LOT more work than Lucy is right now, I can definitely see us getting a second pup when the time is right.

Lucy LOVES Griz, and Griz seems to love her too. They follow each other everywhere!

Anyway, here are a few pictures of Griz during her stay:

Lucy = 6 months old!

I can't believe our little girl (take "little" lightly... she weighs a whopping 52 lbs. as of today) is already halfway to being a year old (we'll never be able to forget her birthday either, because she was born on New Years Eve 2010).  To celebrate it, while we were up at Luke's family cabin in Crosslake, we stopped at our favorite ice cream shop and got Lucy her own ice cream treat!  She waited so patiently while I snapped a few pics of her with her birthday surprise ("Wait" is a command that she's really good at responding to, especially when it comes to food).

Licking her lips, getting ready to dive in...
Mmmmmmm!
Happiest dog.ever.
Lucy has taken a liking for the cabin.  She especially loves the fact that she's off leash for most of the time there, and that she gets to spend time annoying her cousin Bella.  This past weekend was a huge improvement from Memorial Day weekend, where we couldn't take our eyes off of her for even a second before starting to run off.  Turns out, Lucy loves the water after all!  While she doesn't quite care for swimming, she loves to run in to where the water is deep enough to hit her chest, but not deep enough that she has to swim (though we know she can swim, since Luke and I took her out into the deeper part so that she had to swim back to shore).  Playing ball in the shallows and just wading in became her favorite part of going up to the cabin!

Loving the beach with Bella!

Lucy loves Papa :)

Family photo!  Unfortunately, most of them turn out like this...

Waiting so well for her food!

We were sad to have to leave the cabin and head back to reality, but we're anxiously looking forward to the next trip up to Crosslake, and then excited to be able to take Lucy up to my family's cabin in Grand Marais in the fall.

My favorite picture of the weekend!

Picture Overload!

Weighing in at over 46 pounds at 5 months old only puts Lucy about a month behind on the average Great Dane growth charts.  We are starting to think that she's mixed with a lab more and more everyday because of how she's starting to take shape on her way out of puppyhood.  She's eating 3 1/2 cups of food per day and now sleeping with us every night.  Her new favorite thing is to stretch out as long as she can get and sleep right in between Luke and me.  She's been extra sleepy lately and our trainer is sure it's because she's going through another growth spurt.  At our last puppy class, we worked on "Lucy, come" and she seems to be getting it as we work on it with her at home.  While it can be a challenge to make sure that I have the clicker and treats on me while around the house, she's definitely learning the command because she can be anywhere in the yard, and I can say "Lucy, come" and she'll come running from whatever she's got her nose in!

Last week, Lucy met Grizzly (the latest member of the Kleinberg family), and you can see pictures from it here!

And, because I know the real reason everyone stops by here is to see the pictures/videos of Lucy... enjoy!
