Walk for Animals
This is plea from me as we go into the last week of fundraising for the Animal Humane Society's Walk for Animals on April 30th. My goal is to raise $250, and so far I've raised $160. This will be Lucy's first Walk for Animals and we appreciate any monetary support we can get (every little bit helps!)
This is an event that Luke and I have a very personal investment in. Our little Dwight was adopted from the Golden Valley site, and want to be able to give back to them as much as Dwight gave to us during his time in our family.
Please Please Please consider donating (it is tax-deductible). The animals appreciate it more than you can ever know.
To donate, click on the link below. Then click on the blue star that says "Make a Donation in My Honor" at the top of the page, and then follow directions for a credit/debit card payment. If you are interested in making a payment via check or cash, let me know directly.
Thank you!

She's getting bigger!
Tomorrow, Lucy will officially be 16 weeks old. Today she's got her first visit with our vet clinic, so I'm sure she won't be too thrilled with me after she gets her rabies shot... Anyway, here's what you're looking for- more pictures!

See that rabbit in the background? That's her #1 enemy. Poor rabbit doesn't even stand a chance... |
She's figured out that she can dig out the cushion of her chair. |

Lucy's Adoption Story
Lucy wasn't supposed to happen when she did. It wasn't part of our plan yet...
After Dwight died, Luke and I had decided to not even discuss adding a dog to our family until we had waited at least a month to grieve and fall into a new routine without our favorite rabbit. Two days later, I was talking to Luke on the phone, and had something dog-related that I wanted to tell him. I said, "I know we're not talking about getting a dog right now, but when we do, I just want to make sure..." and then Luke chimed in with, "I'm ready to talk about a dog." That was Saturday afternoon. The house had already begun to feel very empty without Dwight, and we were struggling with the hole that was left in our hearts from his death. Despite having several other pets in our house, we were already lonely.
The next day, while driving around, we discussed adopting a large dog sometime soon, the names we coule name it and we started to get excited that we were actually going to start the process soon-ish. I had originally said that we couldn't get a dog until end of May/beginning of June because then my schedule would change for the summer, so we hadn't really seriously thought that we would have a dog before that, but we could start the process immediately, not knowing how quickly the process could go... The dog I had been stalking already on Petfinder.com was already gone, and I hadn't even thought about a dane. In the car, I told Luke that I had just seen a litter of about 6 or 7 dane mix puppies for adoption, and maybe we should take a look at them later. After running our errands, we went to a bbq at Hans and Kaitlins', and we were greeted immediately with, "We're sorry to hear about Dwight. Now, when are you getting a dog?" We responded with "Um, very soon!" and that really set it in motion.
While we were waiting for our food to cook, Kaitlin asked to see the puppies I was talking about, so I showed them (and Luke for the first time) the pictures of Jill and Flake. We decided that night that we would put in our application, and see what would happen (not allowing ourselves to get too excited in case things didn't work out). Our application went in for Jill and Flake at about 9:30 that night to Secondhand Hounds Rescue.
The next morning, Monday, I checked my email and Jill's foster mom had already emailed me back saying that she would love for us to meet her, and provided her availablity. I emailed her right away, asking to meet her that night at 6. I was a nervous wreck all day, and checked my email nearly every 30 minutes to see if she had responded. The foster mom replied with a "Yes!" and at 6pm, we meet Jill at a PetSmart. It was seriously love at first sight...
Luke and I walked her around the store for about 15 minutes and would have brought her home right then and there if it had been possible. That night, we organized the home visit (to make sure we weren't hoarders or something...), and managed to make it for the next afternoon! Jill became Lucy, and in less than 72 hours after we saw her furry little face on the website, she became a full-fledged member of our Lorenz family!
It was quite unexpected (on my end), and was a whirlwind of an adoption procedure, and we already can't imagine our lives without her. We love Lucy.
Quick Timeline:
Sunday- Saw her on Petfinder. Application into Secondhand Hounds by 9:30pm
Monday- Response from Foster mom, Responded to Foster mom, Met our puppy at 6pm, Set up home visit, payed in advance, Received vet history via email
Tuesday- Home visit at 1:50, officially became Lucy Lorenz at about 2pm

14 weeks, 5 days
Lucy also had her very first playdate today with Hans and Kaitlin, and their dog Mona! At first, Mona wasn't too thrilled to be introduced to Lucy, but after a bit of exploring and some hot dog treats, Lucy and Mona became fast friends. It was funny to see that Lucy is definitely the submissive dog in the pack, because every time she went up to Mona in the beginning, she would roll over and expose her tummy to Mona. I'm actually pretty happy that Lucy's taken on a submissive role, because hopefully that means that she'll be less likely to instigate any fights! Unfortunately, my camera was out of batteries when they all came over, so I didn't get any photos of our little girl's first playdate :( New goal- always make sure the batteries are charged!
